Principal Investigator and Faunal Specialist
Katy Crater Gershtein has had a rich and diverse career in anthropology and archaeology. In 2010, she completed dual bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and Spanish, with a minor in Human Rights from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
Katy began her professional journey with AR Consultants, Inc. in May 2011 as a field technician on the Bois d’Arc Lake project, which was her introduction to CRM archaeology. Over the next four years, she contributed to various Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana projects. In 2015, Katy left ARC to pursue a master’s degree in Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Haifa, Israel. There, she completed a master’s thesis on the Zooarchaeology and Taphonomy of Unit III in the Middle Paleolithic Site of Nesher Ramla. Her academic pursuits also encompassed extensive faunal analysis of various Middle Paleolithic sites, shedding light on the subsistence strategies of both Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) and early modern humans (Homo sapiens) in the Southern Levant.
Returning to the United States in 2018, Katy rejoined AR Consultants, where she took on the role of Principal Investigator and Project Manager. In addition to these roles, she is currently focused on establishing a dedicated zooarchaeological laboratory and comparative collection, aimed at researching past environments and subsistence strategies in Texas.
In recent years, Katy has expertly managed extensive West Texas pipeline projects, historic cemetery excavations, and various smaller-scale projects within the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area. Her commitment to the field of archaeology and her expertise make her a valuable asset to AR Consultants and the broader archaeological community.
